First Thing in Oregon

by Olivia Bates

valley:

a place for forgetting
a place made of dust
a space between two things i can’t see
a place for longing
a place for being neither
here nor there but in
a world You’ve never seen
a picture of
a place to have a baby
                                    or a habit
