You (or) Leaving Me Behind

by Olivia Bates

no man is an island
but a woman might be

i stand alone at midnight
my skin like the moon
glowing from someone else’s light.
i do nothing
but fall in love

the dog insists on
joining me for a swim.
no new islands allowed.
i get out
halfway to somewhere
not winning, defnitely

i arrive with a dowry
of debt

everything looks better
at a distance,
not You
me

don’t ask
why You leave
                        it’s obvious

like my favorite pair of earrings
gold hoops, small chains,
we are too heavy to wear

You,
leaving me behind,
make early onset nostalgia something i have
a case of remembering

i would be blessed,
permission to forget,
freed from knowing all of You
i’ve lost on every count –
                                          i’m not shaped for holding

there are snakes
in the grass between
You and me
